IĀ HATEĀ enjoy putting students into partners!
I used to despise putting my students together so they could work in partners. Stress would be written all over my face when I tried matching up my students. Between the list-making and drawn-out instructions, making partners had me beat!
At the beginning of my teaching career, I tried making student partners with a deck of playing cards. Needless to say, this was a bit of a nightmare for first graders. They would get all caught up on the numbers vs. card suits vs. the colors.
Student Partner Cards
When playing cards were voted out, I started using an old matching game set I had on hand to make the partners. These cards worked pretty well, but they needed to be replaced after several years.Ā
Everyone knows I love, love, love making fun stuff for my classroom, so I decided to make my own set of student partner cards.
Partners ā€“ EASY Card Matching System!
So, the student partners card matching system was born.
These partner cards can be used with almost every subject and every grade level. I even had a high school teacher message me that she used them on the first day of school, and they worked great for 15 and 16-year-olds.
How do you use picture cards to put students into partners?
Make two copies of each picture card sheet. There should be at least one match for each card.
Copy the cards on card stock.
Optional step: Laminate the cards to ensure they last all year.
Cut out the cards.
Because there are 32 sets, you will likely have extra cards. Pick and choose which cards work best for your students.
Pass out the picture cards to ensure each card has a match.
Model for your students to find their partner by finding a picture card just like theirs. Ā Students can hold the cards against their chests so the other person can find them.
